For a number of years, computer scientists have been incorporating findings from cognitive science in the design and construction of robots and cognitive systems. This program aims not only to provide students with the necessary basic knowledge of all underlying scientific areas, but also to train them in the practical design of systems using a variety of real technical platforms. This program is unique in Germany, and graduates with these skills are sought after in a variety of industry sectors including aerospace, microelectronics, and consumer electronics. There is a severe shortage of computer experts with the necessary specialist knowledge in this field, and long-term employment prospects are very promising. The program also provides a sound foundation for further studies at the Ph.D. level.
There is a strong trend towards the convergence of three areas of science and engineering that have different origins and have traditionally been taught as different subjects. These are robotics, computer vision/sensor fusion, and the cognitive sciences. As we move towards increasingly complex technical systems that combine mobility with perception, reasoning, and action generation, engineers will need a thorough interdisciplinary understanding of the basics of all these fields, along with a sound grasp of their interrelation and application. It is this expertise that the Masters in Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence aims to provide.
The Masters in Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence is taught in English and German over four semesters and consists of modules that form the theoretical and methodical basis for in-depth practical training. You will complete compulsory modules in the three areas of robotics, cognition, and intelligent autonomous systems, all of which build on the knowledge acquired in your bachelor's program. You will also study aspects of informatics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. In addition to the compulsory modules, you will take an elective module, an advanced seminar, a mandatory internship, and professional practical training.
The Masters in Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence is taught in English and German over four semesters and is a joint program between the Department of Informatics, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Each subject area is taught by leading experts in their field. TUM occupies the top position in all relevant rankings and is optimally equipped with first-rate laboratories and workshops.
In addition to the basics of mechanical robot construction, you will learn about the electronic components of robots, methods of signal processing, sensor data evaluation, programming, artificial intelligence, and human-robot interaction. An additional goal of this Masters program is to bridge the gap between engineering and cognitive science. The program is not solely engineering based by including modules from neuroscience and cognitive science in addition to engineering it encourages students to acquire a wider understanding of the principles of all disciplines involved.
In semesters 1-3, you will complete compulsory modules in the fields of robotics, cognition, and intelligence, including:

* Robot motion planning
* Image understanding
* Artificial intelligence
You will also choose an elective module and take an advanced seminar, a mandatory internship, and professional practical training.
In semester4, you will work on a master's thesis involving the independent, in-depth study of a chosen area of robotics and develop a fully functioning system.
Students should generally hold a bachelors degree or equivalent in electrical engineering, physics, computer science, or a related subject. However, highly motivated students with other backgrounds who want to broaden their perspective by studying this challenging field are also eligible and welcome. Applicants should have good language skills in German and English.
